Really? I've never known one to run rich, they all seem to run lean, especially so when modified. Are you sparks black with carbon deposits?

That doesn't sound too healthy but you will obviously be able to smell the fumes more since there's no magical jiggery pokery happening in the catalytic converter to transform them into rainbows and roses.

The spark plugs will be fouled if the engine is running very rich, lots of carbon build up on the trode. Does sound like it's running very rich if you're chucking black smoke out, make sure your air filter isn't clogged as that can cause a rich mixture since there will be less oxygen going in

Once you've checked plugs and filter we'll go from there. Also is the black smoke only happening at cold start-up because the cold will cause the car to run very rich on first ignition anyway in these temperatures

Check your MAF sensor aswell, might be a bit dirty. I doubt it would be that though because you would know about it as your engine would be running a bit rough :)

It could derive from many things, engines aren't simple pieces of kit these days.

My t sport is also running rich. However I do not get the smoke on the back of my car. Mine is running reprofiled cams and running de cat manifold and straight through system so I would expect to smell the fumes occasionally.

Yeah i'd blame smells on decats, when I decatted mine it went from smelling like a normal car, to a sort of petrolly/fumey smell.

I thought the stock car ran rich on the standard ECU anyway? As it's safer than running on the lean side.

Being too rich can and will lose power. Car should run as lean as possible without the engine knocking lower down and be slightly richer top end (learnt this when doing my road map on Saturday)
It's smart shit all this fuelling and timing malarky
